Directed by Kortnee Lamarre, a New York native who has lived in New Braunfels for 15 years, this classic musical by the New Braunfels Theater Company is sure-fire entertainment in the heat of the summer. Originally opening on Broadway in 1950, Guys and Dolls ran for 1,200 productions and won a Tony Award for Best Musical. It was later filmed for the big screen in 1955 starring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine.

The story is basically about two New York gamblers, whose love lives become entertwined with their love for games of chance. Nathan Detroit, is played by Jeff Fowler and his girlfriend, Adelaide is played by Gigi Gregersen. While Fowler's singing and acting are quite admirable, what will strike anyone from New Braunfels watching the play is how a gal from New Braunfels can do an accent as convincingly as Gregerson does New York.

Beau Gregersen, who plays big-time gambler Sky Masterson, does an equally good New York accent. When asked about whether she coached the actors, Lamarre replied "Nope, no help from me at all. Gigi and Beau lived in New York for a couple-few years. Like any New Yorker, once you live there, that accent..well it gets in your ears!". Soprano Sarah Brooks plays the part of Sara, who falls in love with Masterson.

Director Lamarre also took time to tell us about the New Braunfels Theater Company, a not-for-profit organization. "New Braunfels Theater Company has been around for 8 years now. We were a group of local folks who adore theater and wanted to do more. At that point the town only had one small theatre group and so we decided to give it a try.

"Theater folks are highly creative and driven people and so it was no surprise that we met with success. We have done many shows, musicals and dramas, including Annie Get Your Gun, The Music Man, The Wizard of Oz, Grease, Steel Magnolias, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Plus we do A Christmas Carol every year in December.

"We also have a Summer Children's Camp at our Performing Arts Academy for children. This program is housed upstairs at Lee Edwards Realty Building on Walnut next to Hannah's tacos.

"Annnd... We do an annual large scale children's show in the Spring. This year we did Alice in Wonderland. Past shows have included Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. We have not selected next year's shows yet but there is talk of doing
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

When asked about where they get their actors, Lamarre replied, "Our actors are all local volunteer folks. We place an ad in the paper and advertise in San Marcos and in San Antonio. And they come to auditions. The amazing part is the level and quality of talent that we have right here in New Braunfels and surrounding areas!
